Completed in 1860, St. Michael's Church served as a place of worship for the South Side community for 132 years. The Rectory was built in 1889 and the complex was designated an historic landmark in 1972. The church closed in 1992, was de-sanctified, and has been in a state of deterioration since then. Local developer, Thomas R. Tripoli, purchased the building in January, 2001, with the intent to adaptively re-use the historic structure by converting it into approximately twenty-five condominiums.
In order to preserve the architectural integrity of the buildings, Hanson Design Group, Ltd. planned modest alterations for the exterior. French doors and small wrought iron terraces overlooking downtown Pittsburgh will be constructed beneath existing windows in order to provide natural daylight and ventilation for the living spaces. Alterations include removal of a 1950's aluminum storefront rectory entrance which will be replaced with a wood door and transom to match the original entrances. The Historic Review Commission approved all design changes and a Certificate of Appropriateness was awarded.
St. Michael's Church and Rectory has been renamed Angel's Arms Condominiums and will remain a prominent focal point on Pittsburgh's South Side.
