Hanson Design Group, Ltd. was commissioned by the Allegheny County Department of Economic Development and The Enterprise Zone Corporation to prepare design and construction documents for the streetscapes of both Sixth and Seventh Avenues from their intersection to their ends at McClure Street. This zone stretches through three boroughs; West Homestead, Homestead and Munhall and included in it is the major artery to the Waterfront Development, Amity Street.
Hanson Design Group developed a design motif that can be implemented in a phased manner over time without losing the original intent. Each phase includes new sidewalks with sweeping curves of concrete and brick pavers, a multitude of lush street trees, decorative fencing for protection from the railroad, pedestrian walkways for the physical link to Eighth Avenue as well as several new parking areas along Seventh Avenue.
It is vital to the future success of downtown Homestead to revitalize the main vehicular and pedestrian traffic corridors connecting Eighth Avenue to the Waterfront. This project has created the first layer of revitalization within the commercial districts of these three boroughs. With it now comes the opportunity to extend the commercial viability of the Waterfront into the original community district, and to help eliminate the perceived "threshold" between these two entities.
