  Dinwiddie Street Townhomes
boxboxbox

During the late 1800's, an entire street of large brownstone townhouses were built along Dinwiddie Street in the heart of the Hill District. Over the years, however, the houses have been abandoned and neglected. The extent of damage to these buildings as well as economic realities of the area determined that the most neglected buildings be demolished and new housing be built in its place.

The new structures are the first phase of a project which will eventually include all of the houses along the Dinwiddie Street Corridor to the Hill District. The first of the new buildings is intended to initiate an interest in living on the street, so that salvage and renovation of a number of the original structures can result in a rich mix of inner city urban housing.

The first phase of the project consists of ten new townhomes to be built at the end of the 300 block of Dinwiddie Street.

Each of the new structures maintains the brownstone street face along Dinwiddie Street, and includes a large projected bay in the living room and master bedroom. Extremely important for the current social context of the area is a large integral garage at the front of each building. Careful attention is also given to use of the large backyard space, which is a luxury in the area. An elegant curvilinear retaining wall is built along the hillside at the rear of the properties, and private decks are accessible through glass doors from the dining room of each house.
