Garfield, named for President James Garfield, is in the East End of Pittsburgh and is surrounded by East Liberty, Friendship, Bloomfield and Lawrenceville. It was founded by John Winebiddle in 1771 and boasts a diverse number of restaurants and shops which line Penn Avenue, the main artery through the neighborhood.
Hanson Design Group, Ltd. was selected as one of three local architectural firms by the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation and the Garfield Jubilee Association to design a variety of new single family housing which would dramatically enhance the character of the existing neighborhood.
Four new single-family dwellings are planned, each facing Millvale Avenue, about one city block perpendicular to shops on Penn Avenue. The new homes are designed to be of a larger scale and with much larger yard spaces than the traditional infill housing of the area, replacing sites which were previously used as a parking lot and abandoned grocery store. The exterior of the houses will be finished with brick around the house to the first floor window sill height, and siding above. Large roof overhangs, gable brackets, art glass, window flower boxes, and an air-lock vestibule are some of the design features of the house.
