The Garfield Jubliee Association identified the need to revitalize Black Street, the main thoroughfare in Garfield. Despite a reasonable amount of home ownership, the street was in serious decline.
Funding was gathered from State, City and private sources, and in 1995 the Garfield Jubilee Association bought two houses on Black Street for which Hanson Design Group, Ltd. designed a complete renovation plan.
The houses were gutted to the bare walls and fully restored in an effort to maintain a good neighborhood for the existing homeowners. The result was six new rental units in two homes, for low to moderate income groups. A third building was bought next to the other two and similar changes were made.
Since then, twelve more buildings throughout Garfield were renovated in the same manner, and Hanson Design Group, Ltd. is currently under contract for six additional buildings. When these additional building renovations are complete, the total units will amount to over sixty, all owned and managed by the Garfield Jubilee Association.
