  Mt. Oliver Streetscape
boxbox

This project was created to revitalize the commercial corridor passing through the center of Mount Oliver, one of the older boroughs within the city of Pittsburgh. Its design involved coordination among the Borough of Mount Oliver, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. After an involved design process with the community and city officials, a streetscape plan was implemented to give the community a formal center and revitalize the business district along Brownsville Road, a major thoroughfare to the city of Pittsburgh.

To create a streetscape which would revitalize the central business district and give the community a positive and memorable identity, new sidewalks with trees, streetlights, bollards, planters, benches and banners were installed, along with a central monument with a location for large community gatherings. The clock tower has become an icon for the community, enhancing its public identity. By completing portions of the project in phases determined by funding, disruption to the community and businesses during construction was kept to a minimum.

The new clock tower is the central landmark for the borough while the plaza at its base becomes the official town square for events such as Community Day and other public functions. It also serves as the home of the Christmas tree during the holidays. Architectural streetlights and banners provide an added sense of elegance, security and community enthusiasm along the main business corridor, adding to the community revitalization.
