  North Braddock Housing Revitalization
boxboxboxboxbox

Embedded in the hillside of the Monongahela valley is the proud neighborhood of North Braddock. This community, like many others in the valley, has suffered a severe economic drought with the loss of the steel mill employment base. This small town with unrecognized yet significant history is working hard to make itself a good place to live. The community is concerned about the incessant erosion of their neighborhood. Working hand-in-hand with the community, Hanson Design Group, Ltd. developed a housing development strategy and implementation plan. Unlike many other housing development strategies, Hanson Design Group, Ltd. along with a contractor, Steve Catranel Construction Co., Inc., the team has been contracted to plan, design and build the new housing.

The residents of North Braddock decided that the most important place to begin is where the deterioration is most severe. Therefore, the corner of Jones and Baldridge will see the construction of approximately six new homes as Phase I of the project. Through the four or more phases of the project it is expected that at least 40 new homes will be built.

Also key to the development plan is the transformation of Sixth Street into a tree lined boulevard with greenspace buffering the neighborhood. This green corridor will enable the development of an attractive entrance into the neighborhood.

Planning for the first phase is nearing completion with the first phase of construction anticipated in the summer of 2001.
