Steel Valley Revitalization

The Waterfront development is located on the site where a large steel plant was located. Industry was not only the economic engine for the community, it was a part of its fabric. Although the Waterfront occupies the same site today, the relationship is vastly different. This project is to be the joining of the existing neighborhood with the new Waterfront development, which holds great promise for both sides of the railroad tracks. This is the opportunity to extend the commercial viability of the Waterfront into the original community district, and to enhance the image of the threshold to the Waterfront.
The project consists of the area between Eighth Avenue and the Waterfront development, from Liberty Place to the intersection with Eighth Avenue. This zone stretches through the three boroughs of West Homestead, Homestead and Munhall. The redevelopment of this area is critical to the future of these three boroughs, as this project will be the zipper between the Waterfront development and the communities.
The Phase I area, the segment between Hays and McClure Streets, contains the only direct vehicular and pedestrian link between the Waterfront and the neighborhoods. As such, Amity Street is the umbilical cord. Therefore, this is the place where healing must begin.
The project area is a mixture of buildings, which remain from a time when the mills were active. They were the places of business and small industry that were a second tier to the local economy. However, as did the residential and retail components of the community, the Sixth and Seventh Avenue business relied on an economy that was supported by the mills. Since the collapse of the local steel industry, most of the businesses have departed and been replaced by new businesses or in most cases, vacancy or demolition.
For Phase I, Hanson Design Group, Ltd. has developed a plan which includes new sidewalks with sweeping curves of concrete and brick pavers, a multitude of lush street trees, pedestrian walkways linking Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Avenues, as well as new, attractive parking.
