  Urban Landscape Character Protection
boxboxboxbox

Western Pennsylvania and Central Bohemia are both endowed with natural beauty. A primary feature of these landscapes is the river, coursing through green hills. Both of these river valleys have also been challenged with a major urban center, industrial development and surrounding communities. The history, culture and politics of these two places have rendered a relationship with the environment that is a direct reflection of the cumulative values of those making decisions about these places.

Recent recognition of the importance of the historical, cultural and environmental significance of landscape character in the Czech Republic resulted in the law of the Protection of Environment no. 114/1992, Section 12. This law has given rise to investigatory, analysis and development methodologies that seek to enhance human occupancy of the landscape.

This research initiative explores the specific features and generative forces of these features in two urban setting, Prague and Pittsburgh. The goal is to explore urban landscape character protection and development guidelines for Pittsburgh using specific case study applications.

Sustainable Communities, LLC was the primary research consultant to Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture for this project, with Hanson Design Group taking full Graphic Design responsibilities. Ivan Vorel and Jan Hendrych from CVUT, Fakulty of Architecture, Prague are research assistants for this project, which is funded by the Heinz Endowments.
