Waynesburg is a classic western Pennsylvania county seat, with a main street dominated by a Greek Revival courthouse and a small college several blocks from the business district. High Street, the primary shopping street, has seen better days but has retained nearly all of its historic structures and has a low vacancy rate. Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful was founded as local development corporation to augment the work of the Main Street Manager in coordinating business activity and improving the appearance of downtown Waynesburg.
Hanson Design Group, Ltd. was contracted by Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful to aid in both of these tasks, providing streetscape design, facade guidelines and illustrative drawings for the renovations of three building facades in the Target Area. Additionally, Hanson Design Group's consultant, Planning Principles Inc., was engaged to assist in branding and business planning.
As part of the planning process, Hanson Design Group assisted in the preparation of an application for PennDOT's Hometown Streets Program, which would provide funding for streetscape improvements along High Street. The design for this recognized the existence of two distinct levels of activity in the eight block Target Area: a central core, around the courthouse, with restaurants, financial and personal services, and edge districts at either end of the street, with heavier emphasis on convenience goods and services for local residents. Together with the facade guidelines, the streetscape design emphasized the larger, more institutional scale of the central core and the quieter, more casual nature of the edge districts.
In addition to work along High Street, Hanson Design Group considered connections between the college and downtown, and future work is expected to address ways to draw the two more closely together, as well as to improve other adjacent areas.
