Wylie Avenue Townhomes

Located in the heart of the Hill District, this site was vacant and blighted for over thirty years. Covering three blocks, the project includes twelve townhomes for sale and twenty four rental townhomes. The project was sponsored by a local development corporation and funded by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, private non-profit foundations, the State of Pennsylvania and private banks.
A primary neighborhood street, Wylie Avenue has a mixture of commercial, residential and institutional properties. Most of the structures on this street come to the front property line. Therefore, the rental homes on Wylie Avenue were designed to face the street with a continuous facade. The side streets are more steeply sloped and are predominantly single family structures set back from the street. On Erin and Davenport Streets, the homes are staggered, creating a rhythm similar to the other homes on the street and creating a more individual identity for the owner occupied homes.
Although the budget is limited in size, material and configuration, each of the front and endwalls of the rental homes is brick. Each home has a front stoop and canopy. A unit for accessible living was designed with a large living area and the appearance of an enclosed porch. All units were occupied upon completion.
